Rioja, Gran Reserva Especial, Marqués de Murrieta, Castillo Ygay, Rioja Alta, Spain, 2009

SKU: RIO107/09

86% Tempranillo, 14% Mazuelo grapes.

An icon of Rioja. Intense red cherry colour, nose of raspberry and currants taste of truffles fusing with black licorice and cloves. Focused expressive and melt in mouth.

Producer Information
Established in 1852, Murrieta is one of the oldest and most respected bodegas in Rioja Alta. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived and some, like “Castillo Ygay”, have become legendary amongst wine-lovers. Marqués de Murrieta has not stood back and stagnated however; their 300 hectare estate produces Dalmau – a blend which represents an avant-garde expression of their terroir.

Vineyards
An old single vineyard called La Plana located at 485 metres altitude within the 300 hectare Ygay estate surrounding the winery in the southern point of Rioja Alta wine area. It is exclusively used for this gran reserva wine only, and only in the most excellent quality vintages.

Winemaking
Grapes are first carefully de-stemmed, squeezed and then fermented in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks for 11 days, with daily “remontage” and “pigeage” processes which help the wine to develop its own personality. Both these processes ensure maximum colour and aroma, without producing excessive tannins. The ageing process is 28 months in 225 litre American oak barrels, with at least 10 months in new oak, and 36 months in bottle before release.

Vintage Information
Tempranillo was harvested on the 27th of September and Mazuelo on October the 13th.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet colour. Restrained bouquet builds in the glass showing red fruits, leather and spice. On the palate it is full bodied with rounded ripe tannins. The flavour and texture given extra complexity and freshness by the Mazuelo. While it can be enjoyed now it will be a great vintage for long term maturing.

Food Pairing
All kinds of red meats, game, ibericos and cured cheeses.

Serving Suggestion
Serve at 18º-19º C. Open one hour before serving.
